She attended preschool sice she was 4 years old. At preschool her teachers
noted that she did not speak as well as other kids. Her parents said that
she did not speak until she was 2 _ years old. Currently she can speak in
simple sentences and knows about 100 – 200 words. She gets frustrated
easily especially when she is trying to tell a story or talk about her day.
This often leads to temper tantrums and outbursts of aggression. She became infected with HIV in utero, she is on antiretroviral therapy ( Nelfinavir, Zidovudine and lamivudine) to help control the infection. Her immune system is working well so far but she needs regular blood tests to monitor her viral load and her immunological status. Care-givers are recommended to notify teachers/health staff that Melissa is HIV positive and that they should use universal precautions. |
