OVERVIEW AND GOALS
The main goal of the Our Spirits Are Strong In Side (OSASIS) program is to create a culturally relevant program for Aboriginal youth, in or out of foster care, within the Metro Vancouver area, in order to provide an opportunity to develop a strong connection with their cultural identity. This program is to be culturally appropriate, dynamic and inclusive for the youth who participate, their care-givers and families of origin, including extended family. The intent is to provide access to relevant and varied aspects of Aboriginal culture in a fun and meaningful way, while building leadership and life skills, to all youth involved. We aim to keep the youth at the centre by taking the main direction for this program from the youth, themselves, and facilitating or delivering all workshops or activities based on what they would like to see and do.
For all who are interested, there are two different ways to take part.
| 1 • Youth Advisory Table |
2 • Cultural Youth Group |
This advisory table will be made up of youth in or out of foster care. This group will develop leadership and life skills within a cultural context. After 12 weeks of leadership development, this new youth advisory council will practice their skills through creating and leading a cultural youth group.
This group will consist of the Youth Advisory Table members and any youth, care-giver, family or extended family member of the youth participating. This cultural youth group will be directed by the Youth Advisory Table with help from adult and elder support persons.
